The growth of veganism is set to continue, according to a food expert, who has described the sector as 'interesting'. Flexitarians - i.e. those reducing their meat intake - will be the key to manufacturers creating more plant-based products like meat analogues, says Florian Bark, Product Manager at Hydrosol. He said: "We think the vegan trend becomes more and more interesting and will develop into its own market. Therefore, we think it has a huge potential to stay."

New Zealand plans to slaughter about 150,000 cows as it tries to eradicate a strain of disease-causing bacteria from the national herd. Politicians and industry leaders say it will cost hundreds of millions of dollars, and, if successful, would be the first time an infected country has eliminated Mycoplasma bovis.

Australia's top live sheep transporter shut down

Australia's government suspended the export license of Emanuel Exports - the country's largest exporter of live sheep - after 2,400 animals perished aboard its carrier due to heat exhaustion. The closure eliminates 50 per cent of Australia's live-sheep export. Vegan Saudi Arabian prince Khaled Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud backed the decision on social media, calling for an end to all live transport. "People can help themselves," Prince Khaled said. "Those animals cooking alive and dying from dehydration, can't. So let's make the connection and fight for the weaker group here."

Alicia Silverstone was the guest and she mentioned that she was vegan. She said she had dogs at home and loved them dearly. She said she'd made the connection: How could I love these animals but eat others? What's really the difference between a dog and a pig or a dog and a cow? That stayed with me.

Weight lost, knee pain gone on starch-based diet

My decision to start "The McDougall Program for Maximum Weight Loss" began [when] I weighed 257 and was having considerable knee pain. After looking at my X-rays, my doctor informed me that my knees were almost bone on bone but he could not even refer me for possible knee replacements until I lost 70 pounds. Fortunately, a dear friend had given me a copy of Dr. McDougall's book The McDougall Program for Maximum Weight Loss and I read it. I was desperate since I did not want to continue using pain medication and wanted to have a choice in having knee replacements, if necessary, so I could continue to travel. It didn't seem like it was any time at all before I started losing inches on my knees and after just a few weeks, I was off my pain medications... By the way, I am 74 years old and have learned that it is not too late to restore my body to good health.

Harvard study: Plant-based diet could reduce early deaths by one-third

At least one-third of early deaths could be prevented if everyone moved to a vegetarian diet, Harvard scientists have calculated. Dr Walter Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard Medical School [speaking at the United to Cure Fourth International Vatican Conference] said the benefits of a plant-based diet had been vastly underestimated. The new figures from Harvard suggest that at least 200,000 lives could be saved each year if people cut meat from their diets.

Another 'groundbreaking' study finds veganism is 'single biggest way' to help planet

A new study from researchers at the University of Oxford found that ditching animal products could reduce your carbon footprint by up to 73 per cent. Researchers analyzed the harmful effects animal agriculture has on the planet and reviewed data from nearly 40,000 factory farms in 119 countries. In addition to greatly reducing your carbon footprint, researchers found that if everyone went vegan, global land use could be reduced by 75 per cent. This would be comparable to the size of the United States, China, Australia, and the whole European Union combined. Let that sink in.

Australian cattle industry looks to defend 'meat' label from lab-grown and plant-based products

The peak body for Australia's cattle industry says it is considering calling for reforms to prevent lab-grown meat from being labelled "meat." Experts think a commercial industry to supply meat grown from stem cells in a laboratory is achievable within the next decade and there is also rising demand for plant-based meat alternatives. France recently banned the use of the words "meat" and "dairy" on vegan and vegetarian food labels, while farm lobby groups in the United States are calling for cell-grown and plant-based replicas to be labelled as such.

Research: It costs less to eat a veg diet

A vegetarian diet won't just help to keep your waist slimmer - it'll also keep your wallet fatter. Researchers from the European Association for the Study of Obesity compared a vegetarian diet with the Mediterranean diet, which is based on eating habits of those in Greece and Italy and relies heavily on fish and fruits and vegetables, and the so-called "U.S.-healthy diet" based on government-distributed dietary guidelines. And on average, someone following a vegetarian would have spent $2 less per day [that's over $700 a year!]... [Not to mention] reduced health-care costs from the healthier diet. Researchers from the University of Oxford estimated that Americans would save $250 billion if they chose to stop eating meat.

Is the future of meat fake and slaughter-free?

It sounds like a contradiction - but the meat you eat in the future might come from a plant, or a laboratory, eliminating the need to slaughter animals. The emerging industry is being fuelled by Silicon Valley start-ups, billionaire venture capitalists, Hollywood actors and even some of the world's largest traditional meat processors. Australian scientists now want their own "steak" in the game, but the rapid pace the industry is progressing has upset the global livestock sector, who worry their industry is facing a new rival. A study by the University of Oxford found a viable clean meat industry, when compared to traditional farming, could result in up to 96 per cent lower greenhouse gas emissions, 96 per cent less water and between 7 and 45 per cent less energy.

H&M, Zara and others ban mohair products after animal cruelty investigation

Some of the world's largest clothing chains, including Zara, H&M, Gap and Topshop, have vowed to discontinue selling mohair apparel following allegations of animal cruelty at a dozen goat farms in South Africa. Mohair, made from the hair of Angora goats, is prized for its softness and often used in sweaters, coats and winter scarves. But video footage from an investigation by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals shows workers dragging goats by the horns and legs, and lifting them off the floor by their tails. In some cases, the goats cry as they are shorn. Afterward, workers are seen throwing goats across the floor.

Scorned, animal rights advocates in France intensify guerrilla tactics

Scorned by French lawmakers, an animal welfare group is stepping up a campaign of guerrilla tactics, releasing clandestine videos of mistreatment and appalling conditions in an attempt to shock Parliament into action. "Our goal is to make progress one step at a time," a founder of the organization said.

Cow escapes slaughter, survives winter by joining deer family

At 4 months old Bonnie, a calf, fled from her home in Holland, New York, which was a farm that raised cattle for slaughter, reports Farm Sanctuary. What made Bonnie run was the desperate cries of her bovine family, who were being rounded up to be sold to a slaughterhouse. With her owners busy loading a trailer with confused cows, Bonnie seized the moment and galloped off into the nearby forest. Cameras set up in the forest by hunters started picking up footage of Bonnie surrounded by a herd of deer. Based on what the cameras were capturing, it appeared that Bonnie had found solace with the herd and that the herd, in turn, had accepted her.

Producer and narrator Natalie Portman's new documentary Eating Animals [trailer], based on Jonathan Safran Foer's book, is now in theaters. In this interview with Natalie, CBS Morning host Gayle King says what really struck her was the film making clear, "The meat industry has done a good job of disconnecting eating meat from killing animals. When you eat meat an animal has been murdered." As a meat eater, King also says that she didn't feel like the film was wagging a finger at people who eat meat but that they want them to be aware of the consequences.
