Perspective: Vegetarian vs. vegan
Source:
Well said by my sister Kim: Being vegetarian isn't good enough! There is just too much cruelty in the milk industry. We are being manipulated by their greed into thinking we need dairy. If you give nothing else up, give up dairy products. Try it for one week. It is so easy to do. I didn't think I could do it but it is actually fun... I have lactose intolerance and have been so much healthier in the last year, not to mention losing 11 pounds solely from becoming vegan. You might think that one person doesn't make a difference, but you do!

Soaring antibiotic use in animals fuels 'super bug' fears
Full story: Reuters
Developing countries are pumping livestock full of antibiotics at such a startling rate that they are dramatically increasing the risk of creating drug-resistant "super bugs", scientists warned on March 23. Antibiotic use in animals is expected to surge by two thirds globally between 2010 and 2030, while doubling in emerging giants like China, Brazil, India and Russia, according to a Princeton University study. It warned that the practice is pushing us closer to a time when common infections could become a death sentence because they will no longer respond to drugs.

The vitamin every vegan needs
Full story: One Green Planet
A new study from China found that compared to omnivores, those who ate egg-free and meat-free diets had all the typical benefits of eating more plant-based: lower body mass index, lower blood pressure, lower triglyceride, lower total cholesterol, lower bad cholesterol, less free radical damage, etc. Having said that, if those on plant-based diets don't get enough vitamin B12, levels of an artery-damaging compound called homocysteine can start to rise in the bloodstream and may counteract some of the benefits of healthy eating.

Going vegan could improve mood, productivity of workers, study shows
Full story: Washington Business Journal
Could helping employees go vegan boost their moods and their productivity at work? That's the finding of a four-month study of Geico employees by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Participants dropped an average of 10 pounds and lowered their cholesterol by 13 points. But they also reported increases in overall productivity and saw improvements in anxiety, depression, fatigue and general health compared with workers at five other Geico locations in the study.

Vegetarians less likely to get colorectal cancer
Full story: OneNews, NZ
Vegetarians have a lower risk of getting colorectal cancers compared with non-vegetarians, a study shows. Researchers identified 380 cases of colon cancer and 110 cases of rectal cancer among 77,659 Seventh-Day Adventist men and women. They said vegetarians had a 22 per cent lower risk for all colorectal cancers, 19 per cent lower risk for colon cancer and 29 per cent lower risk for rectal cancer.

Reducetarian - the middle ground between vego and paleo
Full story: Sydney Morning Herald
Brian Kateman from the Earth Institute Centre for Environmental Sustainability at New York's Columbia University has come up with the term reducetarian, meaning someone who's cutting down on, but not eliminating, meat. It's a long way from being vegan but the important thing is that a reducetarian has made a conscious decision to eat less animal food, says Kateman - and even a small reduction helps [health and the environment]. Or as Australian philosopher Peter Singer, author of Animal Liberation puts it: "Reduce now, and next month reduce more. Maybe you'll get to zero, and anyway, you'll be doing less harm."

You'll wear lab-grown leather before you eat a lab-grown burger
Full story: Fast Company
Scientists can already grow a hamburger in a petri dish. But before we see a cow's lab-grown flesh in the grocery aisle, we could find its skin appearing on the fashion runways first. That's according to Modern Meadow, one startup in Brooklyn that is working to create a future that is "cultured not slaughtered."

India is an enormous country, with 1.25 billion people, so when one of their biggest stars decides to adopt a plant-based diet, it's going to get some attention. Indian state bans beef
Full story: NPR
Eating a steak dinner in Mumbai nowadays could land you in prison for up to five years and cost you more than $150 in fines. Indian President Pranab Mukherjee has approved a bill that strictly bans the slaughter of cows, along with the sale, consumption or even possession of beef in the state of Maharashtra, where Mumbai is located. The bill will also include a ban on the slaughter of bulls and bullocks, but not water buffaloes.

To kill a chicken
Full story: New York Times
If you torture a single chicken and are caught, you're likely to be arrested. If you scald thousands of chickens alive, you're an industrialist who will be lauded for your acumen. That's my conclusion after reviewing video footage taken by an undercover investigator for Mercy for Animals. Matt Rice, the director of investigations for Mercy for Animals, noted that federal rules on humane slaughter apply to cattle, hogs and sheep, but not to poultry - even though birds amount to 95 per cent of farm animals killed each year in America.

Media missing the big stories on animals
Full story: Georgia Straight, BC, Canada
Scientific evidence of animal intelligence and sentience continues to pile up. That evidence has huge implications for animal welfare and animal rights, as it poses a difficult question: How can we ethically disregard the interests of sentient beings who think and feel in ways similar to us. Yet despite this sea change in thinking about the status of animals, much of the media has failed to notice it.

Why we should eat vegan 'fish' options
Full story: Hull Daily News, UK
Despite the evidence that fish are smart, sentient animals with a capacity for suffering, we continue to kill them by the billions every year. Amid the talk of sustainability and conservation, there's a failure to consider the individual animals who suffer and die in order for humans to have a fleeting taste of their flesh. Humans don't need to eat fish, and the single worst way to "protect" sea animals is to kill (and eat) them.

Journey from cattle rancher's wife to vegan animal sanctuary owner
Full story: Care2
This is an epic love story. This is also a story about Renee King-Sonnen extending that love to the animals that she - as a cattle rancher's wife - was indirectly responsible for slaughtering and exploiting... "Mammas were running after the trailer. It just blew my mind. And then they cried for, like, a week or more, all these cows, and I was in a very, very bad state." Renee had a serious inner conflict, but her compassion and empathy had kicked in. Then, when another red trailer-truck came in, she couldn't let it take the babies.
