Vegan diets best for weight loss
Full story: South Carolina University Herald, U.S.
Researchers from the University of South Carolina found that people who say no to all animal products have the ability to shed weight faster than those who consume a diet that contains meat and dairy. A vegan diet may be the best answer for those looking to shed a few pounds and gain other health benefits. "We've gotten somewhat carb-phobic when it comes to weight loss," the lead author of this study said. "This study might help alleviate the fears of people who enjoy pasta, rice, and other grains but want to lose weight." [The vegan diet also improved macronutrients more so than other diets.]

Study: Milk may not be very good for bones or the body
Full story: Washington Post
Milk is often touted as one of nature's most perfect foods. But a new study from researchers in Uppsala University in Sweden suggests that consuming more milk could actually be associated with higher mortality and bone fractures in women and higher mortality in men. "I've looked at fractures during the last 25 years. I've been puzzled by the question because there has again and again been a tendency of a higher risk of fracture with a higher intake of milk," said the study's lead author Karl Michaelsson, a professor at Uppsala University.

Mercury levels in tuna 10 million times higher than in seawater
Full story: MFA Blog
Mercury levels in the upper ocean have tripled since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, and human activities are to blame, researchers report. "You're starting to overwhelm the ability of deep water formation to hide some of that mercury from us, with the net result that more and more of our emissions will be found in progressively shallower water," [the study's co-author says]. That increases the odds that mercury levels in key food species will rise, increasing humans' exposure... the mercury levels in a top predator such as tuna are 10 million times higher than those in the surrounding seawater.

Mark Bittman: Don't ask how to feed the 9 billion
Full story: New York Times
The solution to malnourishment isn't to produce more food. The solution is to eliminate poverty. Claiming that increasing yield would feed the poor is like saying that producing more cars or private jets would guarantee that everyone had one. And how do we help those who have malnutrition from excess eating? We can help them, and help preserve the earth's health, if we recognize that the industrial model of food production is neither inevitable nor desirable. There's plenty of food. Too much of it is going to feed animals, too much of it is being converted to fuel and too much of it is being wasted.

If you stopped eating seafood, how would it help the planet?
Full story: One Green Planet
Whether or not you want to believe it, the simple act of eating commercially caught fish should be added to the list of threats facing our oceans. Test-tube milk that 'tastes like the real thing'
Full story: Business Insider
There are already many alternatives to milk. But for those who are still longing for the taste of the original stuff, a new test-tube milk product called Muufri (pronounced Moo-free) could present a viable option. Muufri is a "fairly simple mixture," according to its creators, San Francisco-based bioengineers Perumal Gandhi and Ryan Pandya. Both are vegans who believe the dairy industry practices inhumane and unsustainable methods.

The neuroscience of why gratitude makes us healthier
Full story: Food Revolution Blog
Our world is pretty messed up. There's certainly no shortage of justification for disappointment and cynicism. But consider this: Negative attitudes are bad for you. And gratitude, it turns out, makes you happier and healthier. Does this mean to live in a state of constant denial and put your head in the sand? Of course not. Gratitude works when you're grateful for something real. But what are you actually grateful for? It's a question that could change your life.

U.S.: Livestock industry whistleblowers now have a way to report animal abuse
Full story: Care2
Undercover investigations shine a much needed light on cruelty that goes on in slaughterhouses unbeknownst to the public. The specter of "ag gag" laws, however, threatens to erect a potentially insurmountable hurdle for activists who want to expose cruelty within these industries. To counteract the chilling effect of "ag gag" laws, HSUS has launched a hotline (1-888-209-7177) for reporting neglect and cruelty at factory farms, livestock auctions and slaughterhouses. HSUS wants to hear from industry insiders who know about animal mistreatment and need a place to safely report it.

Cruelty at U.S. chicken facility uncovered
Full story: Care2
In its latest undercover investigation, Mercy for Animals (MFA) has brought to light the heartbreaking treatment chickens face as they're raised and slaughtered for consumption. According to MFA, "Many of the birds have their wings or heads closed in the cage doors, causing severe pain and injury... Chickens are typically only 42 days old when sent to slaughter. Despite their enormous size, they are clearly baby birds, as they still peep like chicks instead of clucking like chickens."
